What is A2 Hosting?
A2 is a web hosting service company that provides a variety of hosting options that meet your needs. Whether you’re starting a blog, managing your company’s website, or building websites for your customers, A2 can take care of your hosting.
A2 is one of the most well-established hosting companies and has continued to be a popular choice among many website builders. The web hosting company connects the public to your website, so it’s essential to choose a company with a great reputation and excellent service.
A2 hosting provides plenty of different hosting plans and claims a 99.9% uptime guarantee, which means when people want to visit your website, they won’t run into issues.
This Redditor used A2 for the basic hosting needs of their personal website. The prices for shared hosting are reasonable. Hopefully, you won’t need to interact with customer service too much, but A2’s customer service has overall positive reviews from those who have needed it.
Types of Hosting Offered (& Reddit Reviews)
A2 offers a variety of hosting options, and more options mean you can choose just the right one for your site. If you need to host a simple website, eCommerce store, or forum, A2 has what you need.
A2’s shared hosting plans cover the necessities that small websites or blogs require. These hosting plans are the least expensive and are designed for websites with minimal traffic. Some users recommend avoiding shared hosting with any company because it’s not great, but shared hosting is a much less expensive option to get your website live. If your site is getting thousands of visitors every day, it’s likely time to upgrade to a VPS or dedicated server.
A2 has four different shared hosting plans, starting at $2.99 per month for the Startup Plan and going up to $14.99 per month for the Turbo Max Plan. The main differences are the number of websites you need to host, and the website speeds. The more expensive plans will allow you to host unlimited websites and offer faster server speeds.
Compare Shared Hosting Plans:
- Startup: Starts at $2.99/Month
- Drive: Starts at $4.99/Month
- Turbo Boost: Starts at $9.99/Month
- Turbo Max: Starts at $14.99/Month
According to Reddit reviews, A2 Shared Hosting is sufficient for basic websites, but every shared hosting plan has its limits. They decided to upgrade after reaching 1,000 visitors per day. A2 does offer VPS (virtual private server) hosting, but it’s not the cheapest option.
A2’s reseller hosting plans are designed for web designers and their customers. With a reseller hosting plan, A2 gives customers access to build and manage multiple websites, while providing the web designer’s customer white label access to make edits to their site.
Reseller hosting is a great option because web designers can build websites without worrying about transferring ownership at the end of the project. And their customers can get access to their site without paying for a hosting plan, or managing all of the backend website settings. The white-label access provided by A2 gives the customers access to a dashboard that’s customized by the web designer without any A2 branding.
Compare Reseller Hosting Plans:
- Bronze: Starts at $13.19/Month
- Silver: Starts at $18.47/Month
- Gold: Starts at $24.41/Month
- Platinum: Starts at $40.91/Month
This Reddit user found A2 reseller hosting to be a great option. Reseller hosting allowed them to run their freelance design business and give their clients easy access to their website. They also noted the great customer service and uptime that A2 offers.
A2 Hosting’s virtual private servers (VPS) are a step up from shared hosting. VPS is a good option for people looking to host a website with more content or a site that’s getting more traffic.
A VPS hosting plan offers some of the benefits of a dedicated server, without the higher costs. On a shared hosting plan, your website is essentially competing with other sites for access to the server. A dedicated hosting plan gives your site full access to the server. A VPS plan is like a hybrid, giving your website a dedicated portion of the server.
VPS hosting will be more expensive, and you’ll need to choose between a managed and unmanaged plan. The unmanaged hosting plan will require more technical knowledge, while the managed plan offers the convenience of shared hosting.
Compare VPS Hosting Plans:
- Unmanaged VPS: Starts at $5/Month
- Managed VPS: Starts at $25/Month
- Core VPS: Starts at $25/Month
A2’s dedicated server hosting is for well-established sites that need the most reliable service. With dedicated hosting, you are renting out a server and don’t need to worry about competing with other sites.
These plans start at around $100 per month, which tends to be the average price for dedicated hosting from a big name company. A dedicated server will give you the speed and power you need to run a big website with thousands of pages, or if your site is getting thousands of visitors every day.
Compare Dedicated Hosting Plans:
- Unmanaged Server: Starts at $99.59/Month
- Discount SSD Server: Starts at $129.30/Month
- Managed Flex Server: Starts at $141.09/Month
- Core Flex Server: Starts at $141.09/Month
✅ Benefits of A2 Hosting (According to Reddit)
According to Reddit reviews, there are plenty of reasons to love A2 Hosting.
Free SSL Certificate
Over the past few years, having an SSL certificate has become essential. An SSL certificate encrypts the information being entered into your website, so it’s especially important if people are providing their email, credit card, or other personal info. And now, Google is giving users a warning when they enter a website without an active SSL.
Most hosting companies provide free SSL, and you can get an SSL certificate from Let’s Encrypt regardless of your hosting plan. But, if your hosting provider doesn’t include the SSL cert, it can be a pain to install it on your site. A2 provides every website with free SSL and makes it easy to install.
Free Site Transfer
Everyone who signs up for an A2 hosting plan can transfer a website currently being hosting elsewhere for free.
Shared hosting plans will let you transfer one website to A2 for free. Reseller, VPS, and Dedicated hosting plans give you 25 free transfers. This is a great perk if you’re considering changing your web hosting provider and want to avoid downtime on your websites.
99.9% Uptime Guaranteed
This guarantees that your website will be up and running at least 99.9% of the time. That translates to less than 45 minutes of downtime per month. If your website is unreachable for more than that, A2 will give you a 5% monthly credit for each additional hour your site is down.
A2 offers a unique money-back guarantee that most host providers don’t. If you sign up for a long-term plan for 24 or 36 months, you can cancel anytime and get a prorated refund. If 18 months go by and you want to cancel your hosting plan, A2 will refund you the remaining months you paid for.
We found some Redditors commenting on A2 Hosting’s Cpanel integration. Cpanel is a front-end dashboard that is friendly for non-technical webmasters, allowing them to make back-end changes without writing code.
This Reddit user gives A2 another positive review, explaining that her husband uses A2 to host a big website getting substantial traffic every day. She makes a note of A2 providing good customer service and having CPanel, which is easy to navigate when making backend changes to websites and code.
⛔ Downsides of A2 Hosting (According to Reddit)
Below, we’ll discuss some of the negative aspects of A2 Hosting reviews Reddit users pointed out.
More Expensive at Renewal
The majority of hosting providers offer a limited discount when you sign up for the first time. A2 currently offers a 66% discount on their basic shared hosting plan and other significant discounts across the plans. The initial discount is great, but the regularly priced renewal fees can be shocking when the initial contract is up.
This Reddit user used A2 to host their Minecraft server. They had a great experience and recommend A2, but did note that they aren’t the cheapest option, especially for VPS hosting.
No Free Domain
One benefit that A2 customers will miss out on is a free domain. Other hosting providers offer new customers a free domain for 12 months when they sign up for a hosting plan. A2 offers .com domains starting at $14.95 per year.
2019 Malware Attack
A2 Hosting experienced a malware attack in April 2019 and customers had troubles for around two weeks. This had a significant impact on A2’s reputation, and they still haven’t fully recovered from the incident. That being said, they have made some product changes, including the introduction of HackScan, to bolster their security moving forward.
This Reddit user recommends using SiteGround over A2 hosting, noting that the 2019 ransomware attack was a sign of declining service.
Where to Find Discussions about A2 Hosting on Reddit
Many people who don’t use Reddit find the site to be confusing and difficult to navigate. On Reddit, users discuss various topics within sub-boards called “Subreddits”.
There are plenty of subreddits dedicated to web hosting, but there is no public A2Hosting subreddit. In fact, this board has been set “private” for some reason. So to find posts about this host, you’ll need to go to more general web hosting-related boards, or boards for their competitors.
Below, you can find a list of subreddits that house discussions about A2.
- r/A2Hosting: This would be the go-to place for A2 Hosting discussions, but moderators have set it private. How strange! We believe this may be due to their 2019 malware hack (described above) to block negative feedback.
- r/WebHosting: Here, you’ll find general discussions about web hosting. This subreddit is not specific to A2, but the brand does come up from time to time.
Unfortunately, that’s basically the list. You’ll have to go to r/WebHosting to join the discussion about this web host.

❓What is Reddit?
Reddit is an online social network and message board. As one of the fastest-growing websites in the world, Reddit allows its users (called Redditors) to chat about thousands and thousands of topics. Reddit accomplishes this by splitting its site into sub-boards called “Subreddits”. Within each Subreddit, there are moderators and regular users. Moderators oversee the discussion to ensure it adheres to basic standards of decency. Regular users generate most of the content on the site by posting their opinions, relaying information, sharing articles and images, and upvoting/downvoting posts.
Because the website’s content is fully user-generated, you must take everything you read with a pinch of skepticism. The upvoting/downvoting system can be a great guide for trustworthy content, as it allows you to see which posts Reddit users reviewed highly or poorly.
The Bottom Line :
Overall, A2Hosting has an excellent reputation, and the majority of users give A2 a positive review. While not everything about A2 is perfect, they provide fast and reliable hosting to many customers. They are one of the top hosting providers and will continue to be a popular choice.
Whether you’ve decided to start a blog, want to build your freelance design business, or you want to host a Minecraft server, you can rely on A2.
A2 Hosting is one of the oldest providers around. They are originally from Michigan and started in 2001 under another name (Iniquinet). Later on, in 2003, the name was changed to A2 Hosting.
On their website you can read that 97% of their customers are satisfied and that they promise “Up to 20x faster servers” – we’ll see later if their servers are as fast as the Road Runner (meep, meep) or whether A2 is more like the Coyote. On top of that, their (first-term) pricing seems like a bargain, but what about the renewal fees?
That’s exactly why I decided to review A2 Hosting and tell you all about their products, prices, advantages and flaws.
What Products Does A2Hosting Offer?
Like many other popular hosting providers, A2Hosting has a lot to offer. Let me tell you what products you can get from them and when to use them.
Besides hosting plans, at A2 Hosting you can get domain names too, and their prices are fair. For example, a .com domain name will cost you $14.95 per year. Among other extensions, you can purchase: .com, .info, .net and .org domains. Country specific TLDs like .co.uk, .de, .fr, .es or .au aren’t available.
A2 Hosting is very popular for its shared hosting plans. Their renewal cost goes from $8.99 to $24.99 per month. It’s the one that most projects will need – unless you have a site with huge traffic or need a special server setup, that is.
They also offer managed WordPress hosting plans. These are shared hosting packages that are optimized for WordPress, come with some additional WordPress features (e.g. staging) and their support agents are WordPress experts. Managed WordPress hosting starts at $28.51 a month at A2 Hosting.
VPS stands for Virtual Private Server. It’s a way to divide a server into smaller individual (sub)servers. This means that you can configure it to your needs and you won’t have to share resources with other clients. They are a good match if you need something in between shared hosting and a dedicated server. A VPS at A2Hosting goes from as little as $5 a month to around $100.
You can imagine cloud hosting as a network of interconnected servers. So your website won’t be hosted on one server, but several at the same time. They are a great solution for those expecting traffic peaks as you can assign more resources as you need them. They start at $5 a month for 20 GB of storage and 512 MB of RAM – storage and resources can be increased.
But if your site is likely to get hundreds of thousands of visitors per month, you probably need a dedicated hosting package. In other words, a whole server to exclusively host your project. These aren’t cheap, at A2 Hosting they start at $120 a month.
If you have clients of your own who require hosting, you can opt-in for the reseller program where you’ll be able to sell hosting plans (without A2 Hosting branding) to your clients. These plans start at around $20 a month.
But in this A2 Hosting review, I’d like to explore their shared hosting plans, so from now on, I’ll refer to those in my analysis.
* A2 Hosting has an unlimited and unmetered policy, if you use too many resources, you’ll be asked to upgrade or to use fewer resources.
A2 Hosting has monthly, 12, 24 and 36-month deals – the above prices are for a 12-month plan. Obviously, the longer the deal (e.g. 36 months) the cheaper it gets. However, be aware that you’ll be requested to pay the full amount in advance.
But let me tell you what each plan will get you:
Their entry plan, Startup, allows for only 1 website and 100 GB of storage. Sadly, it doesn’t come with the ability to restore the backups that A2 Hosting keeps for you. Bandwidth and storage are unmetered.
With the Drive tier, you are allowed to host as many websites as you want and the storage is unlimited. The backup restore features are enabled too. It also comes with more resources; 1 GB of RAM memory and 2 cores.
The main addition to the Turbo Boost package is its higher performance. Your server will work on HTTP/2, you’ll have fewer server neighbors and the caching options (A2 Optimized Site Accelerator) are available. Caching plugins for WordPress, Magento and PrestaShop are included too.
The Turbo Max plans have twice as much resources (RAM and cores) than Turbo Boost.
At checkout, they offer a bunch of add-ons that you can purchase separately. For example, if you’d like to create your own backups, you can get 5 GB of backup storage for $1.99 extra a month. Paid SSL certificates, spam filters and CloudFlare (a CDN) are also available.
A2 Hosting Pros & Cons
Let me talk a bit about its advantages and disadvantages so you know what to expect from this popular hosting provider.
- Speed: As we’ll see later on, A2 Hosting is one of the fastest providers I’ve ever tried.
- Advanced features: Their higher plans come with interesting advanced options like staging areas or a server-side caching system.
- Uptime: They have improved their uptime rate since compared to last years’.
- Server locations: You can choose to host your website in America (East or West Coast), Europe or Asia.
- Unmetered storage and bandwidth: Your storage is unlimited (for the highest 3 plns), although your total amount of files can’t be more than 600,000. Bandwidth isn’t metered either.
- Windows-based hosting: Unlike many other competitors, Windows-based servers are available.
- On-demand backups paid separately: If you’d like to use their on-demand backup system to create your own backups, you’ll need to purchase their add-on.
- Confusing checkout: Even if they are not as pushy as other providers (e.g. iPage), their check out is loaded with add-ons that you most likely won’t need (e.g. paid SSL certificate).
- 35 concurrent HTTP connections: All shared hosting plans seem to be limited to 35 concurrent HTTP connections to the server – this may not be enough for some.
There are some cases where using A2 Hosting will be a smart choice, but other times it may make little sense to use this hosting provider. Let me clarify those for you.
When to Use A2 Hosting
If you are after a medium-priced provider that’s generous with storage and bandwidth, A2 Hosting is a reliable choice.
On top of that, it comes with some features that similar competitors won’t offer, for example, built-in server-side caching, staging areas and speed optimization plugins for CMSs like WordPress, PrestaShop or Magento.
I can imagine that A2 Hosting would be a good fit for new bloggers who need a reliable host, for small and medium-sized businesses who are after a serious hosting service, or digital solopreneurs (e.g. SEO consultants or WordPress developers) who need storage for their website and potentially their clients’.
It’s a really solid option for those looking to host a Windows-based project.
When Not to Use A2 Hosting
However, there are a couple of limitations that make me reluctant to recommend A2 Hosting for larger projects. Having a 35 concurrent HTTP connections limitation may be a deal-breaker for those getting more traffic.
A2 Performance Tests
Along with support, performance is one of the most important aspects of a hosting provider. Having the most advanced technology and features is pointless if your hosting provider can’t keep up with your website’s needs.
That’s why I’ve intensively tested A2 Hosting’s speed and uptime. Let me show you the results.
A2 Hosting Speed Test
Slow websites aren’t cool, and a fast hosting provider is vital for supporting a quick site. As you can imagine, your site’s speed is crucial for having better user engagement and many studies have correlated slow sites with lower conversion rates.
On top of that, Google and other search engines dislike slow sites. So even more reasons to have a fast hosting provider.
For over a month, I closely monitored A2 Hosting’s speed (and that of other competitors) using tools like Pingdom, GTmetrix, and Google’s PageSpeed Insights.
I have to say that A2 Hosting’s speed is impressive. As you can see in the table above, they were one of the top 3 providers in our tests and had an outstanding performance.
A2 Hosting performed very well, in our tests. Its average loading time was 2.29 seconds, only a 0.19 seconds slower than the top-performing provider (SiteGround).
If you are worried about speed, A2 Hosting is a trusty provider. Much more Road Runner than Coyote indeed.
Is A2 Hosting’s Uptime Good?
Another point search engines monitor closely is the Uptime – this measures how many interruptions your site had. In other words, how much time your website was offline. If you don’t have a decent uptime (e.g. 99.95% or higher), your organic rankings could suffer.
As you can imagine, projects that highly depend on their site being online all the time (e.g. online stores), can be deeply harmed by a server that has constant periods of downtime.
To monitor uptime I use StatusCake, a tool that checks each website every 5 minutes.
A2 Hosting guarantees a 99.9% uptime for all their clients in their Terms of Service. That’s a good start, but competitive projects will need a tiny bit more.
In the past (2019) A2 Hosting has struggled with uptime ratios, but in our last tests, as you can see in the table above, they had outstanding uptime results.
A2 Hosting Review: Do I Recommend It?
Even if A2 Hosting is not my absolute favorite hosting provider, it’s on the top 5 for sure. It’s true that it has some limitations that can make it not ideal for those looking to host really big projects. For example, the 35 HTTP concurrent connections may not be ideal for some.
But it also comes with a whole bunch of perks for the price you’ll pay:
- Top speed thanks to their technology (e.g. SSD drives and server-side caching system)
- Unlimited bandwidth
- Generous storage
- Reliable support
- WordPress site owners will love their staging and speed optimization options
- You can choose among 4 server locations (in 3 continents)
So if you want to start cheap (and have decent renewal prices), A2 Hosting is a capable provider for those looking for a solid host.

A2 Hosting Alternatives
For many, A2 Hosting will be a good option, but as I mentioned before, some businesses will find it to be limiting. Let me mention a couple of alternatives:
- Check out DreamHost if you are looking for the best bang for the buck
- A2 Hosting offers reliable support, other providers with great customer care are SiteGround, InMotion Hosting and DreamHost
- Along with A2 Hosting, SiteGround, Kinsta and WP Engine has the most advanced WordPress features
> But feel free to test A2 Hosting without any risk for 30 days and decide if it’s a good alternative for your project.
Thanks for reading this A2 review, I hope it helped you get a better idea of what you’ll be getting with A2 Hosting. However, if you have any questions, please leave a message and I’ll try to help you.

“excellent wordpress hosting, excellent support, clear site, it’s just the hosting anyone can have an excellent experience. continue the good job the team is doing. thank you.”
“I’m still not really sure what went wrong but Jeff in support was quick to get in touch. It’s good to have reasonably fast support responses through the ticketing system. I appreciate you can’t control the world, however, I’d rather not have my website and email suddenly stop working in future. If you could prevent that happening I’d appreciate it even more – especially considering I’m only a few days into using a2 as a hosting provider. Still better than Go Daddy though – they suck. At least everything is working now. Thanks Jeff! P.S. Give Jeff a raise for speedy response times! Also, I would have given 4.5 stars if your system would allow it, but just falling short of 5 stars due to the random problem so shortly after sign up. Enjoy!”

A2 Hosting has a reputation for offering rock-solid and lightning-fast web servers. But do they live up to this reputation?
Read on to see what I’ve discovered while testing A2’s services, and also what their customers rant and rave about.
About A2 Hosting
Although they are a general hosting provider, A2 specializes in hosting for developers.
So regardless of which type of hosting (shared, VPS, dedicated) you need, you will get high-performance and reliable hosting.
Shared Web Hosting
Based upon my experience, A2 Hosting’s shared hosting plans are faster than their competitors. Additionally, they offer 24/7 customer support for all subscribers, ultra-reliable servers, unlimited resources, and free website migration.
Other features of A2 Hosting’s shared plans include:
- PHP (5.x and 7.x)
- Python (2.6, 2.7, and 3.2)
- PERL 5.10
- MySQL 5.6 databases
- PostgreSQL 9.6
- Apache 2.4
- FTP/SFTP access to your server environment
- Free SSH access
- Shared SSL certificate.
All shared plans come standard with free SSD storage to ensure top-notch performance.
My tests indicated that A2 Hosting also provides impressive speeds for your website as well as solid uptime. See below for details.
Choose from 3 Linux or Windows Plans
If you are looking to get started with a cheapest web hosting plan from A2 Hosting, you’ll begin by choosing the operating system of your server environment: Linux or Windows.
Regardless of which option you choose, you will have three different plans. All of them come with unmetered bandwidth and SSD storage.
The higher level plans come with more features. All plans, however, come with standards like databases and auto-installers.
A2 Hosting offers a branded version of the popular cPanel control panel to customers purchasing a Linux shared hosting plan (also VPS and dedicated). Plesk is available for Windows servers.
The Lite Plan
The entry-level plan, which A2 Hosting call their Lite option, gets you hosting for one website, use of five databases, 25 email addresses, unlimited SSD disk space, unlimited data transfer/bandwidth, and a free (shared) SSL certificate.

The Swift Plan
A2 Hosting’s most popular shared hosting plan is the Swift, which is the mid-range option.
This plan is very similar to the entry-level plan. Its primary difference is that it allows you to host unlimited websites and offers you more resources. In particular, there is no limit on the number of databases or email accounts you can have.
The Turbo Plan
A2 Hosting’s high-end shared hosting plan, called the Turbo option, is very similar to the other shared plans, but you get extras designed to increase the performance of your websites.
The most important extra of the Turbo plan is that your site(s) will be hosted on A2 Hosting’s Turbo servers. These servers allocate more resources to each individual user because there are fewer users per server. A2 Hosting claims this increases the speed of your site by a factor of up to 20.
A2 has a robust set of speed technologies it uses.
Another extra of the Turbo plan is that it includes the A2 Site Accelerator. It is a cPanel plug-in that speeds up your site by providing pre-configured caching.
There are three major subsystems of the A2 Optimized Site Accelerator:
- Turbo Cache: caches the entire contents of your web pages so that they can be served without running PHP
- OPcache/APC: improves responses of pages that require the use of PHP
- Memcached: increases the speed of MySQL databases by keeping your most used data in memory for quicker retrieval.
A2 Hosting offers a special kind of shared hosting for WordPress. These plans are more expensive than the general shared plans described above. But they include a number of things that make them appealing:
- Turbo optimized for faster page delivery
- Staging server
- Jetpack Personal
- Easy WordPress backups.
There are other minor features that make setting up and running a WordPress site easier. So this is worth a look if you are running a WordPress-based site.
For those who have outgrown their shared hosting plans or need better speeds for their websites, A2 Hosting offers virtual private servers (VPS).
VPS Management Options
Typically, moving up from shared hosting to VPS requires you to either gain the technical knowledge required to manage your server “slice” or hire someone with the necessary system administration experience.
However, this is not the case with A2 Hosting. You can opt for three kinds of management for your VPS plan:
- Unmanaged: is perfect for those who are developers or system administrators looking for a fully customizable, bare metal installation.
- Managed: offers the full power of a VPS plan, but with the same user-friendly cPanel platform bundled with the shared hosting plans. It also comes with what A2 Hosting call their 100% worry-free Host-Guard Management from the Guru Crew Support team (which is available 24/7).
- Core: for those wanting a managed VPS plan, but with the addition of root access/administrative privileges. You will get worry-free support from A2 Hosting, but you will also get complete control over your server environment.
You can get unmanaged VPS plans for shared hosting prices.
A2 Hosting’s managed VPS plans (including Core) are more expensive but still competitive by industry standards. They are also more powerful than the unmanaged plans. The table below provides the basic information.
|Power+||2 TB||4||4 GB||75 GB||$32.99|
|Prestige+||3 TB||6||6 GB||100 GB||$46.19|
|Pinnacle+||4 TB||8||8 GB||150 GB||$65.99|
Like the shared hosting plans, you can choose to host your site on a Windows or Linux server. Windows plans cost 25% more than their Linux counterparts. And instead of the cPanel control panel, Windows plans offer Plesk.
For the purposes of data redundancy and performance improvement, all VPS plans get RAID 10 storage. RAID 10 drives combine striping (which increases speed) with mirroring (which increases reliability).
A2 Hosting offers both managed and unmanaged dedicated servers for those in search of web hosting for the fastest speeds and resource-intensive or highly-trafficked websites.
Managed dedicated servers get upgradeable RAID 1 storage, which means all the data is mirrored and thus less prone to data faults or loss.
Reseller Hosting Plans
A2 Hosting offers reseller plans for those looking to get into the web hosting business themselves. They allow you to choose between Windows and Linux options, and there are four different reseller plans from which you can choose (regardless of which operating system).
With the exception of the basic plan, billing software (WHMCS or Blesta) is included. You can upgrade to a premium WHMCS package.

Uptime and Downtime
One of A2 Hosting’s biggest selling points is their performance.
Performance and Reliability
I’ve tested A2 Hosting’s uptime and load speed over the last year on my server. Note that this is only one server so this doesn’t necessarily indicate how all A2 Hosting servers perform. But it does provide a useful snapshot of their speed and reliability.
There is one major problem with this data. A2 Hosting had a significant amount of downtime in April and June of 2018. Since that time, they’ve performed exceptionally.
As a result, I’ve provided the averages for both 12 months and 6 months. I think the last 6 months is more important. However, it’s worth bearing in mind these major outages.
|Feb 2018||100.00%||546 ms|
|Mar 2018||99.99%||422 ms|
|Apr 2018||99.81%||657 ms|
|May 2018||100.00%||361 ms|
|Jun 2018||99.34%||341 ms|
|Jul 2018||100.00%||308 ms|
|Aug 2018||99.99%||411 ms|
|Sep 2018||100.00%||336 ms|
|Oct 2018||100.00%||291 ms|
|Nov 2018||99.99%||272 ms|
|Dec 2018||100.00%||291 ms|
|Jan 2019||100.00%||301 ms|
|6 Month Average||100.00%||317 ms|
|12 Month Average||99.93%||378 ms|
The 12-month average for A2 Hosting’s speed is very good. The six-month average is exceptional – even better than WP Engine.
This A2 Hosting server had two major down periods: 82 minutes on April 26 and an astounding four hours on June 14. Since that time, the server has been rock solid and fast.
What you think of this will depend upon you. It does, however, indicate that A2 Hosting notices problems and fixes them. Check back here for updated information.
A2 Hosting back their claims with a 99.9% uptime commitment, and they strive to meet this promise by following the web hosting industry’s best practices, using top-notch datacenters, and carefully managing all servers.
With that said, there are two instances when the uptime commitment does not apply:
- During routine maintenance and upgrade periods that are scheduled ahead of time
- During outages that result from circumstances beyond the control of A2 Hosting.
If you see any downtime as a result of issues not related to the exclusions listed above, and the downtime accounts for more than 0.1% of your total time that month, you will receive compensation from A2 Hosting.
This compensation is in the form of a service credit that is equal to 5% of the fees you paid for that month. You will receive one such service credit for each hour that your website is unreachable beyond the 0.1% (~42 minutes) uptime guarantee.
However, the maximum service credit you will get for missed uptime promises will be equal to the full amount you would have paid for that month for web hosting had you seen no outages.
Please note that to receive service credits as compensation, your downtime must be confirmed by an A2 Hosting staff member.
You can use your control panel (cPanel or Plesk) to manage partial or full backups of your website.
To restore your website using a full backup, you’ll need to provide a copy of it to the A2 Hosting support team. There are no fees when requesting such services.
If your former web hosting provider supports cPanel, A2 Hosting can manage the migration on your behalf. Migrations are available for shared, managed VPS, and managed dedicated accounts, and this process typically takes less than 72 hours.
Though not required, A2 Hosting recommends that you allow an overlap of at least seven days between opening your hosting account and closing your previous hosting account to minimize the downtime you might see during the transfer process.
Migration Without cPanel
If your former web hosting provider did not use cPanel, A2 Hosting will transfer your website but only one database.
A content delivery network (CDN) places copies of your website on servers throughout the world. This allows users to be served from a host that is local to them. As a result, pages load faster.
A2 Hosting plans include CloudFlare free of charge. Cloudflare is a commonly used CDN. A2 Hosting claims that a website using CloudFlare sees 200% faster page loads, uses 60% less bandwidth, and is more secure.
There are two ways to activate your CloudFlare CDN:
- Using the CloudFlare cPanel plugin
- Signing up on CloudFlare’s website.
If you decide to use CloudFlare’s cPanel plugin, you can easily enable and disable CloudFlare for your domains and subdomains using your A2 Hosting cPanel environment.
If you decide to activate using CloudFlare’s website, you will need to use the CloudFlare site to manage all of your settings.
With this option, you cannot use the A2 Hosting cPanel to manage your CDN.
SSL certificates allow your site to send and receive data securely. They are essential for e-commerce and are now considered by Google to be a best practice for all websites. They are good for providing user trust and even to boost your search rankings slightly.
There are two different ways you can get SSL certificates from A2 Hosting.
Free Let’s Encrypt SSL
First, if you have purchased a shared or reseller hosting package, you can opt for Let’s Encrypt, an SSL solution that provides your site with enhanced security.
Users with Managed VPS Plans and Managed Dedicated Servers can also use Let’s Encrypt, but they will have to have a dedicated IP address as well.
Advanced SSL Certificates
The other option is to purchase an SSL certificate from A2 Hosting. They offer three types of SSL certificates for sale:
- Single Site — works on a single site with one domain name
- Wildcard — works on all pages of a given site, including sub-domains
- Advanced — works across multiple websites, each with its own domain name.
Using a website builder, you can publish a site as easily as a Facebook page – but with more control.
A2 Hosting offers their own website builder, which you can get included in a hosting plan. They support everything from single-page to e-commerce sites.
A2 Hosting is a green hosting company. In addition to being 100% carbon neutral in their day-to-day operations, A2 Hosting is a partner of Carbonfund.org, which is a leading organization dedicated to battling global climate change.
Since 2007, A2 Hosting has supported Carbonfund.org’s reforestation efforts and development of clean, renewable sources of energy.
Hosting Backend and Customer Support
Immediately after logging in to your A2 Hosting account, you will be redirected to a dashboard landing page.
There, you can manage everything relevant to your website, including the services to which you subscribe, as well as your domain names and account billing.
You can easily manage the settings for all of your A2 Hosting accounts and domain names using the dashboard. You can also upgrade or downgrade your plans if necessary, as well as manage your billing-related settings.
If you need to share access to your account, you can do so under the Developer Access section. This means that multiple people can manage your website without you having to share credentials to the master account that has the permissions to control things like billing and developer access itself.
A2 Hosting allows you to transfer domains owned by other providers and migrate websites hosted elsewhere. You can initiate either of these actions using the control panel area.
You will notice that support-related content and links are prevalent on your dashboard. In addition to the Support PIN that is prominently displayed in the top-left corner, there are two hyperlinks in the navigation toolbar that you can use if you need help.
First, there is the Support tab, which allows you to:
- View your existing and open new support tickets
- See records of (and request) website migrations
- Check the status of A2 Hosting’s servers, as well as whether there have been any instances of service interruptions over the past few days (this is important, especially given that the uptime guarantee requires you to report downtime to receive compensation)
- Navigate to the knowledgebase
- Navigate to the notification center, where you can customize the service-related notifications you receive from A2 Hosting
- Navigate to the A2 Hosting company blog, where you can read about all things web hosting and web design.
Second, there is the Open Ticket tab which, contrary to what its name suggests, leads you to the Client Area. In this area, you can:
- Submit a sales ticket if you have questions about purchases
- Submit a hosting question if you are having a problem with your account
- Submit questions to either the Support or Billing teams that are not related to an existing domain name or hosting account.
You can access a record of all tickets you have created and submitted using the left-hand navigation bar. Your tickets are separated based on the teams to which your question was routed.
Tech Support Team
If you ever have any questions, comments, or concerns, you can get in touch with the A2 Hosting “Guru Crew” Support team 24/7 via their internal ticketing system, Skype, telephone, or live chat.
If you’re interested in self-help resources, A2 Hosting maintains a robust and in-depth knowledgebase. The homepage for the knowledgebase contains links to FAQ pages based on topic, as well as links to helpful, frequently-used articles.
Furthermore, the knowledgebase is easily searchable (a necessity, since the website’s navigation is lacking — there are just too many articles to be found for any other method to be super efficient).
Refunds and Money-Back Guarantees
If you purchase a web hosting option from A2 Hosting and you decide within 30 days that they are not right for you, you can take advantage of the money-back guarantee and receive a full refund of all fees paid.
After the 30-day period has elapsed, you can still cancel your account. However, you will only receive a pro-rated refund that is equivalent to the unused service for which you have already paid. (This does not include domain registration.)
From the dashboard, you can launch the cPanel for your website; if you are hosting multiple websites with A2 Hosting, you will see a list of cPanels available for your use on the dashboard home page.
On the left-hand side of the cPanel is a panel of information relating to your account. It includes information on things like your domain name and directory on the server.
It also includes: addon domains, aliases, autoresponders, bandwidth, mailing list disk usage, MySQL disk usage, total disk usage, number of email accounts, and email filters.
The primary management area, which comprises the left and middle portions of the cPanel, allows you to do things like:
- Manage your files
- Install scripts that extend the feature set and functionality of your website using Softaculous, an app installer that works with cPanel
- Access staging features for your website
- Create, manage, and optimize your website’s databases
- Handle your domains and subdomains
- Control the email accounts associated with this particular website/domain name
- Access metrics on user visits, including frequency and length of stay
- Secure your site by setting up security suites and applying SSL certificates.
More advanced features available include software that supports programming languages and website optimization and caching.
A2 Hosting Alternatives
HostGator, Bluehost, and SiteGround are all good alternatives to A2 Hosting. I will look at HostGator in the most depth because they are the most like A2 Hosting. However, give serious attention to Bluehost and SiteGround as well.
Many people who consider A2 Hosting also consider HostGator. How do these two companies match up?
When comparing the prices for shared hosting plans, I looked at how much you would pay if:
- You received start-up/contract discounts
- You paid on a monthly basis (and therefore received no discounts).
In general, HostGator is notably cheaper than A2 Hosting – especially if you sign up for a long contract. This is even more true for Shared and WordPress hosting.
A2 Hosting is cheaper with their VPS and Dedicated plans when purchased at full price. Also, A2 offers very cheap unmanaged VPS plans.
Performance and Stability
Both companies claim that their shared hosting plans perform well, but only A2 Hosting offers the (paid) option to place your websites on servers that host fewer websites than a traditional shared server.
|A2 Hosting||99.99%||378 ms|
As you can see from this table, HostGator has been more stable over the last 12 months. (This is not true over the last 6 months.) But they load pages substantially slower than A2 Hosting, regardless of the time period.
Technical Support and Customer Service
Both companies offer 24/7 technical support. A2 Hosting offers a slightly more robust knowledgebase. They both offer an uptime guarantee with most packages.
Refunds and Money-Back Guarantees
HostGator offers a slightly longer money-back guarantee for new users: 45 days. A2 Hosting only offers a 30-day money-back guarantee.
However, after this initial period, only A2 Hosting offers refunds for any unused service that you’ve already paid for (this is especially nice if you’ve opted for an extended contract upfront in exchange for lower prices on a monthly basis).
Furthermore, A2 Hosting offers refunds even on their dedicated server options.
Features and Functionality
If you’re tech-savvy, and you need a speedy web host that supports the latest and greatest technology, as well as bundling premium offerings (such as SSD storage) with even the most basic packages, then A2 Hosting is the company for you.
If, however, you’re looking for an easy-to-use product at a great price, then HostGator is the company for you.
You’ve probably heard of Bluehost: they are one of the most popular web hosting services around. they host over 2 million websites on the internet — and there are good reasons for this.
In addition to being inexpensive and easy to use, their products integrate well with WordPress, which is one of the most popular content management systems today.
Bluehost offers nearly as many options as A2 Hosting, but Bluehost aims more toward those looking for an easy-to-use solution.
Founded in 2004, SiteGround is a provider of premium-level hosting backed by excellent support and top-tier infrastructure.
While SiteGround was once run out of university dorm rooms, they are now one of the leading providers of web hosting services, with 4 datacenters (located in Chicago, UK, Netherlands, and Singapore), employing 400 people, and managing over 500,000 domains.
If A2 Hosting is too “techie” for you, but Bluehost is too restrictive, consider SiteGround.

Pros and Cons
What are the upsides of using A2 Hosting? What are the downsides?
Flexibility: A2 Hosting strives to support as many technologies, software platforms, integrations, and so on as possible, so you’re most likely able to use whatever tools and products you’ve selected with your web hosting plan.
Speed and Uptime: even when having server problems, A2Hosting provides great speed. They had uptime problems in the first half of 2018, but have since been great.
Developer-Friendly: The entire A2 Hosting platform is extensible, so you’ll be able to integrate all of the tools you currently use with your website, no matter how complex or obscure. If for some reason, A2 Hosting doesn’t currently offer support for an integration that you need, you can open a support ticket and request a feature enhancement from the A2 Hosting development team.
Complexity: A2 Hosting offers a lot of options, which can be overwhelming for someone looking for a simple, easy to use web host without a lot of distractions. Developer-friendly, in some senses, is inherently the opposite of “hassle-free” and “very easy to use.”
Not PCI Compliant: while this limitation can easily be rectified by integrating with a secure shopping cart solution, some creators of online stores may prefer a web host that is, by default, PCI compliant and therefore requires no additional work when setting up an online store for e-commerce.
Our readers can currently save 51% on A2 Hosting by using this discount link. Money-back guarantee included so give them a try!
Conclusion: Is A2 Hosting Right for You?
If you are a developer or system administrator comfortable with the management of servers, you will find that A2 Hosting offers excellent deals, especially when you consider the number of features that come with a typical plan.
However, if you are not, you will still find A2 Hosting worth consideration. Its shared options are a great choice, and as your site grows and it’s an easy upgrade to VPS plans or dedicated servers.
Overall, it’s hard to find many faults with A2. Check out what our user community has to say about A2Hosting.
